Agreed, Its all related and interesting (to me anyway) but I didn't mean to contaminate Christians build thread.

BTW, didn't that crossmember come back from blasting in great shape? Thats amazing for a car of this age... probably garaged for most of its life? The POR 15 should help keep it that way for a while longer...

All interesting to me too, I've learned a lot!

I was very surprised too and it welded like a dream - quality 70s British metal you see!

I'm hoping to get a couple more bits back from the blasters tomorrow so look out for more updates this week.

Quick picture update -

Rear cross member after three coats of POR-15 - I'm happy with the finish now, it's just a shame my cheap paint brushes left bristles everywhere.

And my rear brake drums, drum backing plates and under tray fresh from the blast cleaners:

Hopefully i'll get to paint them all tonight. Which colour do you reckon I should do the drums? Black like everything else or Battleship Grey?

Have you tried spraying POR15, its massively messy but you get a really nice finish (Also on the floors, walls, the alloys stacked in the corner etc etc...)

I would do the drums black. Gray for brake calipers.

No no I think i'll stick to brushing and rollering for now.. I already make enough mess as it is! :)

Calipers what are they? I'm all drums :P

Do you have any thoughts on doing a disc conversion .... on the front only(?), or do you think the drums will be up to the job with 3-cylinder power?

.... I only saw rear drums and backplates being blasted....

Yes, I just wanted to spark a reaction! :)

At the front i'll probably go down Colin Valentine's Fiesta or KA front caliper route, it seems to be tried and tested. Otherwise, i'll try and make my own kit. At the back I will see how the standard drums hold up, but might upgrade them later down the line.

Aygo vs Imp clutch comparison

Jonathan at Station Motorsports has just kindly sent me over some pictures of the Aygo and Imp clutches being disassembled ready to create a custom hybrid.

The plan is to use the Aygo flywheel, clutch and pressure plate with the standard Imp input shaft. To do this he's had to machine the centre out of the Imp clutch, strip the Aygo clutch down, machine out the splines and press the Imp centre splines in instead. This will then get welded and balanced.

its looking good christian!
sorry about the clutch disc being larger than the old one, the majority of Aygos have the bigger clutch fitted and thats pretty much all I can get, I can try and source the smaller early one for you if you like?

although there is always this when you feel its getting slow: aygo supercharger :)

forgot to add this link which you might find handy later on: Toyota Tech - exactly the same tech information we use at work.

Thanks Charlie that link will come in handy. I'm already aware of that supercharger conversion, it was my step dad at Toyota who donated the Aygo to Banzai magazine for their supercharged competition car!

The project's slowly ticking over at the moment - what with clutch palaver and house hunting my progress has slowed a little. The good news is that i've found a house with it's own POWERED garage! This is big news, up until now i've been using an assortment of caravan leisure batteries to power my lights and a noisey old generator for tools - now I can work long into the night without having to worry about running out of power or keeping the neighbours up with the sound of the genny!

I move in on the 18th June so I've just got to work out a way of transporting the car 30 miles with no suspension... any helpful suggestions are appreciated! B)

I might just have to do that!

Quick update: I stripped the drivers side rear wheel arch back to bare metal last weekend and painted it in a few coats of POR15. The finished product looks awesome (pics to follow) and I didn't find any hidden rust!

It just took much longer than I'd anticipated! B)

I can't recommend those Clean & Strip Discs enough, they might only last 15 minutes but they do a bloody good job!
